James Strong was born in New York City and in 1844 graduated from Wesleyan University as valedictorian. Later, moving to Flushing, New York, he pursued biblical research, held numerous local places 
of work and arranged, built and was the president of the Flushing railroad. In 1856 he earned the degree of Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) from Wesleyan University.
